Down
to earth at last! During the last six months, our team has been working hard to source the materials and labour needed to construct the concrete paths, raised beds, shed and arbor structures, as well as to complete the landscaping and plantings. So far, more than two dozen companies have generously agreed to donate products or skills to help build the garden. July and August will be busy months what with coordinating all the details, acquiring the permits and finalizing the building schedule. We expect the site to be bustling with contractors in September, too, as they begin to install the hydro and water, remove the grass to create paths, and bring in soil and natural stone to define the garden spaces. During the same time, the cedar structures (raised beds, shed and arbor) will be constructed off-site and brought to the garden for installation. Finishing touches will be made during October to complete some of the perennial plantings and clean up the garden before programs start in 2005. We will continue to keep you informed of our progress, and of events to support the Garden’s development. Contact any of the GEG community – there are lots of ways for you to get involved. Spade dancing - realizing a dream Joan Mathieu and Jennifer Mackie, Co-Chairs Tuesday, June 8 2004 was a momentous occasion for the Guelph Enabling Garden, when our groundbreaking ceremony took place at the site in Riverside Park. We were blessed with gorgeous weather, a gentle breeze, and a fabulous turnout of about 50 members of the Guelph community who joined in to launch the project. We were pleased to have our MP, Brenda Chamberlain and Mayor Kate Quarrie provide best wishes. And Jane and Richard Dell, from Reid’s Heritage Group, our major benefactors, also shared why they have put their efforts behind this project. Others from various organizations, which have either partnered with us or anticipate using the Garden when it’s built, attended and had the opportunity of touring the area to get a better sense of what will be happening later in the summer. Besides being delighted with the turnout, it was really special to see us getting closer to actually building. Joan and I and the board, heartily thank all those who have supported the creation of this dream so far. Without you we wouldn’t be where we are today. Stay tuned for more information and an anticipated celebration in the fall when the first phase of the Garden is in place.
Canada’s first Hometown Hero Glynis Logue, our Project Manager and Landscape Designer, has been selected from among 100 candidates to be named Canada’s first "Hometown Hero". This is a new national award created by Earth Day Canada to recognize one outstanding Canadian environmental hero who has made a difference and improved the environment in his or her city. Glynis received the award from natural artist and environmental leader Robert Bateman at the Earth Day Gala on June 15, 2004 in Toronto. From the beginning, Glynis has been a major driving force behind the Enabling Garden. Her dedication and commitment to the project has never faltered. The award definitely recognizes her enthusiasm and desire to see our garden become a reality this year. As the award suggests, she is "one of the dreamers and doers, the unsung heroes of our communities." The Guelph Enabling Garden organization is very proud and happy to have this Hometown Hero as our Project Manager.
