  • Position: Horticultural Therapy Intern (two positions available)
  • Location: Guelph, Ontario
  • Contract Hours: 17 hours/ week for 10 weeks. January 4th– March 19th 2021
  • Contract Pay: $15/ hour

New Horizon’s Grant Pilot Project Purpose

  • To employ 2 internship candidates 170 hours in the horticultural therapy profession following Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association internship guidelines and supervised by a Registered Horticultural Therapist 
  • To promote computer literacy among seniors
  • To reduce isolation and promote mental health and wellness among seniors through horticultural therapy program delivery

Job Description:

  • 2 part time staff will be supervised over 10 weeks of a practical, educational, horticultural therapy internship position
  • Staff will learn the foundations of horticultural therapy and how it is implemented at The Guelph Enabling Garden, as well as the goals and vision of The Guelph Enabling Garden as a community organization
  • Staff will collect data and design a series of surveys that will be implemented over the length of the grant
  • Staff will perform outreach to local senior populations and support them in building computer literacy with the goal of being able to engage on an online video conferencing platform for a series of horticultural therapy programs
  • Staff will learn to design and deliver horticultural therapy programs online to senior populations and record outcomes

The ideal candidates will have the following education and experience:

  • Staff will need quiet at-home office space with reliable internet, a dependable computer and phone on Mondays and Fridays for 10 weeks, and access to a form of reliable transportation at times to purchase supplies and drop off kits
  • Competent computer skills
  • A knowledge of the field of Horticultural Therapy, and the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association’s voluntary registration process
  • Priority will be given to a candidate with previous education/ experience in the field of horticulture therapy
  • The ideal candidate for the internship will have degree/ certificate in horticulture, urban agriculture, marketing, research and development, environmental conservation, humanities, psychology, social sciences, teaching, health sciences and gerontology or working with senior and diverse populations and a strong desire to work in the field of Horticultural Therapy
  • Provide a Vulnerable Sector Police check
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills and be a self-initiating learner 
  • A creative mindset
